I moved to the Epic Homestead in September of 2020 and began the transformation of what was a small house and a sprawling patch of bare dirt. Over the last few years I’ve absolutely transformed the space, but there’s so much more to do!

Gardening Advice To Use For Years To Come
If you are completely new to the world of gardening, then you are probably thinking that some tips on how to grow and maintain a garden will help you immensely so that you can begin growing your own. Listed below are some tips to get you started with your gardening endeavors.
A tip to prevent dirt from accumulating under your fingernails while working in the garden, use a bar of soap before starting. Rake your fingernails across a bar of soap and it will seal the undersides of your nails so that dirt will not collect beneath them. When you are finished in the garden, just use a brush to scrape the soap from beneath them and your nails will still be sparkling clean.
If you have specimen plants which need warmer climate zones than the rest of your garden, you can easily create a suitable space for them within your regular garden! Just create a shelter with a south facing wall which will become a solar collector, absorbing warmth in the day and releasing it at night, thus providing your specimen plants with the perfect environment!
If you need the extra ammunition to rage war on weeds, consider planting your plants closer together even if it means planting them closer than what is recommended. Dense plantings will ensure that no seeds from unwanted weeds will sprout and grow in your beautiful landscape design. If weeds begin to sprout near the edge of the foliage, consider adding heavy mulch to drown out the pesky weeds.
Don’t try to remove low lying weeds by hand. Instead get a small shovel and flip them over so their leaves are under the dirt. You will kill the weed and the leaves will rot creating a fresh mulch like material for you to use. It is green and nourishing for the other plants.
Do you enjoy fresh mint, but don’t like how they engulf your garden in their growth? Rein their growth; you can do this simply by planting mint inside a larger garden container or pot. You can even plant the container in the ground. That way, the roots won’t be able to escape the container, and the plant won’t overrun your garden.
Keep yourself safe, it’s the first thing to know about gardening. Wear protective eye-wear when handling lawnmowers and other garden machinery. Wear gloves when you are working in the dirt. This will keep you safe in case of an incident and protect your body from different elements in the environment.
The best time to plant deciduous trees are in the summer and fall. The best way to tell if it is a good time to plant these trees, is to look at the new growth and notice if has hardened. It is best to plant the trees before the ground freezes to reduce transplant shock.
Choose carefully the plants you want to grow. Some plants are simply not made to grow indoors. If you want to grow vegetables, you can easily grow broccoli or Brussels sprouts indoors. Alyssums and zinnias are great flowers to grow indoors. You can also experiment with other kinds of plants, but keep in mind that it might not work.
Seeds take a lot more time and effort to grow than nursery transplants. That being said, planting seeds is much cheaper and gives a greater sense of satisfaction to see something actually grow from seed. Hard to grow plants or perennials are best purchased from a nursery. This is a great way to have a ready-made garden!
A great way to assure a successful organic garden year after year is to keep a gardening journal. You simply need to jot down what vegetables do well and those that don’t, as well as certain pests or other issues that your garden runs into. By doing this, you’ll know what to change or keep the same the following year, resulting in a gorgeous organic garden.
As you can see from the above list of tips, gardening can be very useful in providing you with beautiful and delicious plants and crops that can supplement your family or your customers. After following these tips, you will no longer be new to the world of gardening, but you can become a gardening expert.
