2023 ADAPT Seed Trial | Growing Heirloom Collard Greens

2023 ADAPT Seed Trial | Growing Heirloom Collard Greens

In this video, I discuss the 2023 ADAPT Seed Trial. I signed up at Seedlinked.com to become a part of the trial. I received my seeds in the mail yesterday, and decided to start them today. I will be growing three heirloom collards. I believe anyone can plant, raise, and harvest food from small spaces. We’re seeing shortages of basic items, with food being among them. I hope this video inspires and makes others realize that growing food in a suburban setting can be done. The backyard grocery store never has empty shelves! Happy Gardening!

A Little Guide To A Lovely Garden

Gardening serves different purposes for many people. For some, gardening is a means of relaxation, as they find it therapeutic to create beautiful floral arrangements and give new life to flowers. Others use gardening as a means of sustenance, growing their own fruits and vegetables for consumption. The tips in the following article will help you with your gardening needs.

To make your garden more productive, allocate space based on what grows best in your area instead of simply choosing your most favorite crops. Although you may love beets, if tomatoes grow better in your climate then give them more room in your garden and make your beet plantings smaller. Ask your neighbors or take a look around your area to see what grows best in your region.

Have your soil analyzed by a laboratory for a small fee so that you know which nutrients you need to add. Many college agricultural departments or cooperative extensions will provide this service for just a few dollars. Once you have the report, head to a farm supply company and buy what you need.

Plants need room to grow. Packing too many plants in proximity to one another will make them compete for resources and you’ll subsequently either have one plant die, or have both plants grow in much worse conditions. It’s advisable to research the full size of a plant and look at how deep and how far apart the plants should be grown.

Take care of weeds right away when you see them sprout up. Weeds can grow very quickly, and they can take over your garden if they are left unattended. It is easier to keep weeds under control when the weeds are still relatively young. Large weeds have deeper roots and are more difficult to remove.

Remember to remove weeds from the garden. A vibrant garden will be overrun with weeds if they are left alone. To aid in this venture, you might want to use white vinegar. White vinegar is natural, very inexpensive, and can really kill the weeds! Putting white vinegar on your plants gets rid of much of the need to pull out the weeds.

When and why should shrubs be pruned? Most shrubs need pruning to increase flowering. Deciduous spring and early flowering shrubs should be pruned immediately after flowering. Cut back old wood to encourage new growth. The buds for next year’s flowers will appear on this new wood. Late summer flowering shrubs should be pruned in spring. They will produce flowers on the shoots that grow immediately after pruning. Winter flowering shrubs simply need pruning in early spring to clean up any dead or diseased branches.

Pick garden vegetables often and early. While immature, many types of vegetables are very tasty in their young phase. Snap peas, little summer squash, cucumbers, and budding broccoli can be picked to keep the plants in a state of reproduction for a longer period of time. This will also increase yields with a second harvest off of the same plants.

Vegetable water makes a wonderful fertilizer. Next time you boil or steam your vegetables to eat, set aside the cooking water. This water is chock full of nutrients, and will provide a nice, nutritious boost to your garden. Make sure the water is thoroughly cooled first hot water can damage and even kill plant roots.

Remember to disinfect your garden tools periodically. This important function should not be overlooked. When you cut away damaged or diseased parts of a plant, there can be residuals of the diseased plant left on your tool. If you do not clean your tool, you can spread the disease to healthy plants.

To make sure you don’t harm your plants when you water them, only use water at a lukewarm temperature. Cold water can shock your plants, making it more difficult to absorb the water properly. Try filling your watering can before you go to bed at night so that it’ll be the perfect temperature when you’re ready to water your plants in the morning.

In conclusion, many people have different reasons for gardening. Some garden for relaxation, while other garden for food. If you remember the tips from this article, you can create a garden that suits your needs, whether you wish to grow a beautiful floral landscape, or a personal grocery in your back yard.
